A carburetor has a housing (18) in which a control roller (22) is rotatably mounted. In the carburetor, a section (25) of an intake channel (21) is formed. In the control roller (22), a partial section (27) of the intake channel (21) is formed. The control roller (22) controls the free flow cross-section of the intake channel (21). The carburetor (11) has a fuel chamber (28). Into the partial section (27) of the intake channel, a fuel opening (19) discharges, which is connected via an unbranched fuel channel (29) to the fuel chamber (28). A simple construction of the carburetor is achieved in that the carburetor (11) comprises an electrically actuated valve (30) that controls the fuel flow through the fuel channel (29). For a method for operating an internal combustion engine with a carburetor (11), it is provided that before or when starting the internal combustion engine a temperature (T) is determined and that the fuel flow through the fuel channel (29) when starting the internal combustion engine is controlled as a function of the temperature (T).
