The invention relates to a method and a device for temperature-dependent current limitation of an energy storage device for electrical energy. According to the method of the invention, an adjustment of a maximum permissible charging and/or discharging current of the energy storage device is carried out as a function of a temperature of the energy storage device, wherein the following steps are executed: determining a plurality of temporally successive energy storage temperature values during a current time interval (S1); determining a current average value of the energy storage device temperature during the current time interval from the determined energy storage temperature values (S2); comparing the determined current average value with a predetermined temperature setpoint (S3); and restricting the maximum permissible charging and/or discharging current of the energy storage device when the determined current average value is greater than the temperature setpoint (S4).
