A switching valve (10) is described, in particular for metering a fluid for a downstream arranged delivery pump (2), with a flow channel (20), an axially movable valve needle (14), a valve element (16) which can be actuated by the valve needle (14) in an opening direction and which is arranged in the flow channel (20), wherein the flow channel (20) can be flowed through by the fluid at least temporarily counter to the opening direction of the valve element (16) when the valve element (16) is actuated by the valve needle (14) in the opening direction (backflow), and wherein the flow channel (20) has, viewed in the backflow direction (22) upstream of the valve element (16), a fluidically effective shield (24) which keeps the backflow at least partially away from a surface (36) of the valve element (16).
