The present invention relates to a method for operating an exhaust gas turbocharger (1) which comprises a compressor (10) and an exhaust gas turbine (11). According to the method, a pressure ratio across the exhaust gas turbine (11) is set (6) on the basis of a compressor pressure ratio setpoint (600) for a pressure ratio across the compressor (10) and a compressor mass flow setpoint (601) for a mass flow through the compressor (10).
