A method and control system for controlling the primary engine of a load transportation machine, in particular a forwarder. The load transportation machine is configured to be driven on the ground at least off-road, with and without a load in an alternating manner. The method comprises detecting the work step of the load transportation machine relying on at least two control movements by the driver; determining a value for at least one control parameter of the primary motor of the load transportation machine by utilizing the detected work step; and controlling the primary motor of the load transportation machine by means of said value of the control parameter of the primary motor.
