A method for controlling a internal combustion engine (1) supercharged by means of a turbocharger (12) and provided with a number (N) of cylinders (3), each of which is connected to an intake manifold (4) via at least one respective intake valve that is actuated independently for each of the cylinders (3); the method envisages: recognizing a release step of the supercharged internal combustion engine (1); determining the total torque (C obj ) to be delivered; and controlling a number (N a ) of cylinders (3) active for injection and combustion so as to generate the total objective torque (C obj ) and controlling a number (N s ) of cylinders (3) inactive for injection and combustion so as to draw in a mass of air, preferably the maximum amount of air possible, up to the end of the release step of the supercharged internal combustion engine (1).
