It is provided that the at least one virtual operating element (12, 13, 33, 34, 37, 38, 38, 40) is defined on the steering wheel (1) and that by means of the sensor unit (2) directed at the steering wheel (1) and an evaluation unit (3) the movement or gestures in connection with the steering wheel (1) are evaluated, such that the sensor unit (2) in at least one predefined area on the steering wheel (1) detects movements or gestures of the hand and/or the fingers and/or the thumb and forwards them to an evaluation unit (3). It is further provided that the evaluation unit (3) compares movements or gestures detected in relation to the steering wheel (1) with at least one predefined stored pattern and the evaluation unit (3) upon predefined correspondence with the at least one pattern triggers a predefined switching step.",
