The invention describes a method for controlling an electric machine (6) to start or restart a thermal engine of a vehicle, the machine (6) driving the engine in rotation in a direct direction during its restart by means of a flexible transmission element (4), the control of the machine (6) taking place upon detection of slippage of the flexible element (4), when slippage is detected, reversal of the direction of rotation of the machine (6) or cancellation of the rotation of the machine (6), so that the engine is driven or recalled to a starting or new position by oscillating at least once around it, and, from this position, driving the engine in rotation in the direct direction by the machine (6) for a start or restart.
