A method for operating an internal combustion engine with a combustion engine, a fresh gas line, an exhaust line comprising an actively regenerable exhaust aftertreatment device, wherein for a cylinder of the combustion engine the supply of fresh gas is controlled by means of an intake valve and the discharge of exhaust gas is controlled by means of an exhaust valve, wherein scavenging is performed by, given an overpressure in the fresh gas line in the region of the intake valve compared to the pressure in the exhaust line in the region of the exhaust valve, purging of gas present in a combustion chamber of the cylinder through a second event for the intake valve and/or the exhaust valve is carried out, is characterized in that the scavenging is employed during the regeneration of the exhaust aftertreatment device.
