Damage Detection and Reporting in a Vehicle
DRIVE
March 18, 2015
An onboard system for suspension or steering damage detection in a wheeled vehicle includes a control unit (10), sensors (11a-11o) and a memory (15). If a sensor input, or a combination of sensor inputs, exceeds a safety threshold, the control unit records the incident in the memory. The system registers minor accidents, such as a kerb strike, which may not cause immediately obvious damage, but may cause deterioration later. Preferably the system includes a communication unit (17) and/or user alert unit (16) which prompts a vehicle inspection to be arranged. GPS may be used to record the incident location, and to transmit that location to third parties, e.g. highway authorities. Location data may be fed into a satnav system to generate a position alert and/or revised route guidance. The system may be used in fleet vehicles to share hazard information with other fleet vehicles.
