In an internal combustion engine, a fuel injector (15), an NO x storage catalyst (13), and a particulate filter (14) are arranged in an engine exhaust passage. When post injection (PI) is performed for raising the temperature of the NO x storage catalyst (13) or particulate filter (14), if fuel for prevention of clogging (B, C, D) of the nozzle opening of the hydrocarbon feed valve (15) is injected from the hydrocarbon feed valve (15), the amount of the post injection (PI) is reduced or the post injection (PI) is stopped.
