In a method for determining the state of charge of a traction battery of a materials handling vehicle, wherein a control device of the materials handling vehicle determines a state of charge value from parameters of the traction battery, in particular the voltage of the battery and/or the battery current, the control device determines and stores at least a shutdown voltage before switching off the materials handling vehicle, stores a shutdown state of charge value corresponding to the state of charge at the time of shutdown, and records a shutdown time (t0) of the materials handling vehicle, and after switching on the materials handling vehicle, the control device determines the battery voltage as a switch-on voltage and a shutdown duration (t) until switching on from the shutdown time (t0), and checks whether the switch-on voltage lies within an expected range (1), wherein the expected range (1) depends on the shutdown voltage and the shutdown duration (t), and if the switch-on voltage lies within the expected range (1), the shutdown state of charge value is taken as a valid state of charge value, or otherwise the state of charge value is newly determined.
