A filter (12) for trapping PM in the exhaust gas is provided in an exhaust passage (6, 7) downstream of a turbine (8b). A filter regeneration control for removing PM deposited in the filter (12) by oxidizing the PM is performed. The amount of PM deposited in said filter at which the execution of the filter regeneration control is terminated after the start of the execution of the filter regeneration control is larger when the atmospheric pressure around the vehicle equipped with the internal combustion engine is low than when it is high.",
