Activation of pedestrian protection mechanism

The invention relates to a method and a device in a vehicle for activating a pedestrian protection mechanism. The method comprises acquiring a signal indicative of whether the motor vehicle impacts with an object and a signal indicative of vehicle speed before time of impact. Further, the method comprises acquiring a signal indicative of degree of impact with the object and determining, after a time period has elapsed since the time of impact, the time period being based at least on the acquired vehicle speed, whether a measure of the degree of impact is above a lower impact threshold and below an upper impact threshold; and if so, activating the pedestrian protection mechanism.
