A method of calculating an actuating variable for the operation of a vehicle, comprises the steps of: - choosing a section of a route as a smoothing window in which the actuating variable is to be calculated, - fitting a polynomial function representing the actuating variable to a time series of given data points in the smoothing window, - calculating the actuating variable within the smoothing window, - shifting the chosen smoothing window by adding at least one further data point, - updating the calculation of the actuating variable by fitting the polynomial function to data points defined in the shifted smoothing window.
