The present invention relates to a cylinder (1) of reduced cost, which guarantees excellent working conditions by minimizing the losses by friction and the wear of the component. For this purpose, the cast-iron cylinder (1) is subjected to a finishing process with more than one polishing step, followed by a coating with an amorphous diamond-like carbon film (3), guaranteeing a low friction coefficient and high durability on any type of internal combustion engine, even on those that undergo high work stresses, which may be higher than 200 bar (20 MPa). Additionally, the advantages of the present invention are achieved by means of a cylinder 1, the work surface of which, after receiving the coating, has roughness ranging from Rz 0.5 µm to Rz 4.0 µm, this roughness having, as a characteristic, the fact that the average valley roughness (Rvk) is at least three times higher than the average peak roughness (Rpk).
