The invention relates to a pedal device (1, 100) for a motor vehicle, in particular for controlling a vehicle speed, having a pedal plate (2) that is rotatable between a zero position and an end position about a first rotation axis (20) by an angle (±), at least one return spring (30a, 30b) for returning the pedal plate (2) to the zero position, a transmission element (3) that is coupled with the pedal plate (2) and is rotatable about a second rotation axis (31) parallel to the first rotation axis (20), and a braking device (5, 150) for applying a point braking force acting against the rotational movement of the pedal plate (2), characterized in that the braking device (5, 150) is switchable as a function of the angular position of the pedal plate (2). The invention furthermore relates to a method for operating a pedal device according to the invention.
