The invention relates to a method for rapid collision preparation of a motor vehicle, in which a signal from a sensor unit (3, 4), which comprises an ultrasonic sensor (8) and an acceleration sensor (9), is evaluated for collision detection. According to the invention, it is provided that for rapid collision preparation the sensor unit (3, 4) generates a combined signal of the ultrasonic sensor (8) and the acceleration sensor (9) and a pedestrian protection system (14) is activated prior to the actual collision.
