The disclosure relates to a method for determining a need for cleaning a brake disc (18) or a brake drum. In a first step of this method first data (54) indicative of an environmental condition of the brake disc (18) or the brake drum is obtained. Additionally, one method for estimating a corrosion condition of the brake disc (18) or the brake drum out of at least two methods for estimating a corrosion condition of the brake disc (18) or the brake drum is selected based on the first data (54). In a further step, second data (51) indicative of a corrosion condition of the brake disc (18) or the brake drum is obtained using the selected method for estimating a corrosion condition of the brake disc (18) or the brake drum. Subsequently, a need for cleaning the brake disc (18) or the brake drum is obtained based on the second data (S4). Additionally, a method for operating a brake system is presented which comprises determining a need for cleaning a brake disc or a brake drum. Moreover, a data processing device is explained. Further, a computer program and a computer-readable storage medium is presented. Additionally, a vehicle comprising said data processing device is explained.
