Before or after densification of a CMC preform, dormant cooling holes (120) are provided that pass through the first group of plies (110) but are covered by the second group of plies (210). The dormant cooling holes (120) become open upon erosion of the second plies (210). The opening of the dormant cooling holes (120) allows air to flow through the cooling holes (120) to the area of erosion to slow the erosion process.",
