The motor vehicle (12) furthermore has a second monitoring device (48) that detects whether a traffic object is located in a blind spot range (36) of a side mirror (34). The invention is based on the task of providing a detection device for detecting traffic participants located laterally from the motor vehicle (12) that can be realized with minimal equipment expenditure. For this purpose, the second monitoring device (48) is likewise coupled to the radar sensor (54) and is designed to detect the traffic object in the blind spot range (36) on the basis of the signal (L) from the radar sensor (54).
