The invention relates to a heat pump with a cycle (11) in which a compressor (13) and a turbine (17) are provided in order to alternately compress and expand the working gas and in this way charge a heat accumulator (16). According to the invention, it is provided that components from gas turbines are used for the compressor (13) and the turbines (17h, 17n). Since the turbine stage (17) of the gas turbine is normally operated at different temperatures, however, it is necessary to increase the mass flow of working gas to such an extent that the turbine stage can be operated at its operating point. For this purpose, the compressor stage (13) of a larger gas turbine is combined with the turbine stage (17) of a smaller gas turbine. Since the compressor stage (13) then requires a lower rotational speed for operation than the turbine stage (17), a transmission (20) is furthermore provided which permits the operation of the hydrodynamic machines at different rotational speeds.
