The invention relates to a device for illuminating an assembly (2) in the interior trim (1) of a vehicle. The device contains a planar light guide (3) which is at least partially covered with an optical lacquer layer (4). Due to the planar design of the light guide, larger areas can be illuminated more easily and homogeneously. The optical lacquer layer protects the light guide particularly at locations where soiling is to be expected or where contact with further components is planned. The optical lacquer layer has a defined refractive index and thereby controls the exit of light rays at the surface of the light guide. The lacquer layer is connected via an adhesive (5) to a cover element (6) made of spacer fabric and laminate. This achieves a mechanically secure fastening of the light guide to the cover element to be backlit.
