Vehicle airbag system for protecting pedestrians and cyclists

An airbag system (18) for protecting a pedestrian or cyclist against collision with a vehicle and to be mounted near the front windscreen (21) of said vehicle, comprises an inflatable airbag (14) in a collapsed state and a cover (16) enveloping the airbag. The cover has a weakening area (13) which is designed to give way upon inflating the airbag so as to deploy the airbag out of the cover. The cover (16) is flexible and has a sealing means (22) is provided which extends over the weakening area (13). Thereby, the airbag may be mounted near the windscreen of the vehicle; furthermore the sealing means provide protection against external influences, such as dust, fumes and bacteria.
