With this device for controlling the automatic stopping of a vehicle engine, the engine (1) is stopped when the operation of the brake pedal by the driver meets or exceeds a prescribed threshold value during driving, and when the vehicle subsequently stops and the absolute value of the road gradient at the point in time the vehicle stops meets or exceeds a cancelation threshold value, coast stop control is canceled.
