"textContent": "An internal combustion engine has a cylinder in which a piston is mounted for reciprocating motion, which drives a crankshaft rotatably mounted in a crankcase. The piston delimits a combustion chamber into which a spark plug protrudes. The internal combustion engine has a starting device for starting the internal combustion engine. The ignition of the spark plug takes place at an ignition timing (ZZP) that is controlled by a control device. The ignition timing (ZZP) is controlled in an idle speed range according to an idle speed control that has an earliest ignition timing (ZZP1). The internal combustion engine has a decompression valve that, in the open state, connects the combustion chamber with a pressure relief space and that is open when the internal combustion engine is started and closes when the pressure (p) in the combustion chamber exceeds a closing pressure (p1). In order to achieve safe closing of the decompression valve, it is provided that the ignition in the idle speed range takes place for at least one engine cycle (xl, x2) deviating from the idle speed control at a closing ignition timing (ZZP2) that is at least approximately 5° crankshaft angle before the earliest ignition timing (ZZP1).",
