The invention relates to a total station (1) with an electro-optical distance measurement unit (11) and a scanning functionality as well as an evaluation unit for evaluating the acquired measurement signal data and converting the same into scan points (36) for a point cloud, whereby a point cloud having the scan points (36) can be generated. According to the invention, the distance measurement unit (11) is configured such that distance measurement can be carried out by means of runtime measurement and waveform digitizing (WFD). Furthermore, the total station has a program memory unit providing at least two scanning modes, wherein the at least two scanning modes differ in at least one measurement rate, that is, in the number of scan points per unit time.
