The attenuator (1) comprises a tubular sound attenuator housing (10) that is adapted to enclose a flow duct between a face-side inlet opening (11) and a rear-side outlet opening (12) such that a flow is directed from a central point of the inlet opening to a central point of the outlet opening. The attenuation housing (2) is inserted into the attenuator housing and perforated in a flow direction to form multiple holes (27). The attenuation housing is divided into multiple attenuation mats (21-26) arranged one behind the other in the flow direction.
