A hydroelectric power generation apparatus characterised in that it comprises: - a hydro turbine (2) having a rotary turbine shaft (21); and - an asynchronous generator (3) having a rotor winding (31), which is solidly connected to a rotor shaft (32) that is mechanically connected with said turbine shaft to be rotatably actuated by said turbine shaft, and a stator winding (33), which is operatively coupled to said rotor winding; and - an AC-AC converter (4), which has a first port (41) that is electrically connected with said stator winding and a second port (42) that can be electrically connected with an electric power distribution grid (5). Said AC-AC converter performs a bi-directional transmission of electric power between said asynchronous generator and said electric power distribution grid.
