A crash box (3) has, on the cross member side, a coupling section (24, 25) which overlaps the upper leg (11) or the lower leg (12) and is joined to it. According to the invention, the coupling section (24, 25) has a recess (27) which is open at its end face (26). At least one wall section (30, 31, 32) bounding the recess (27) is welded to the upper leg (11) or the lower leg (12). An outwardly directed upper front web (14) adjoins the upper leg (11). An outwardly directed lower front web (15) adjoins the lower leg (12). In at least one front web (14, 15), a bead (35) oriented in the vehicle vertical axis (z-axis) can be provided in the region in front of a crash box (3).
