A monitoring device monitors a vehicle (100) that travels through unattended operation using an electric motor as a power source, and includes: a selection unit (210) that selects which one of a first method and a second method is used to acquire a speed of the vehicle (100) according to a status about the speed of the vehicle (100), the first method being a method of acquiring a speed of the vehicle (100) using a detection value from a vehicle speed sensor (140) that makes an output in synchronization with rotation of a wheel of the vehicle (100), and the second method being a method of acquiring a speed of the vehicle (100) using information about a rotational speed of the electric motor provided in the vehicle (100); and a speed acquisition unit (230) that acquires a speed of the vehicle (100) using the method selected by the selection unit (210).
