The method involves displacing a seat surface unit (7) partially in a downward direction relative to a back unit (6) of a safety seat (1) during a climbing phase. A relative displacement between the safety seat and a motor car (2) or relative displacement of the seat surface unit is detected by a recognition unit (8), which is connected with a release unit. Protection units are released by the release unit before reaching upper dead center. Unrestrained impact of a person (5) of the motor car is prevented and/or forces acting on the person are reduced by utilizing the protection units. The protection units are designed as head airbags, side airbags and belt tensioners. An independent claim is also included for a safety seat for a motor car.
