The collection container comprises a housing (2), which has an inlet (4), a separation chamber and an outlet (26) for discharge of the separated liquid. The separation chamber is divided into two sub chambers (8,10), which communicate with each other through an overflow (24). The former sub chamber is assigned a heating unit (28) and the outlet. The former sub chamber has a smaller receiving volume than the latter sub chamber. The inlet is assigned a sealing unit (32) for hydrogen gas-tight sealing. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a fuel cell system with a fuel cell and a liquid separator; and (2) a method for operating a liquid separator.
