Disclosed are a positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery that includes: a core including a lithium metal composite oxide having a layered structure; and a shell including a lithium metal composite oxide having a layered structure and having a different composition from the core, a lithium metal composite oxide having a spinel structure, or a combination thereof, wherein the shell is positioned on the surface of the core, a method of preparing the same, and a rechargeable lithium battery including the same.
