The method involves providing two elongated sensor lines of a distance sensor (7), where the sensor lines run side by side. The sensor lines are designed for the detection of a distance (A) to a user (B). The sensor lines have sensor configurations that are varied along a sensor extension. The longitudinal position of the user is determined as a function of the sensor measured values of the sensor lines by a controller (5). An independent claim is included for a control system for a closure element arrangement of a motor vehicle.
