The present invention provides a method to synthesize nanocomposites containing intercalated FeF- or FeO- nanoparticles in a graphitic carbon matrix by reaction of a volatile iron compound with a graphite fluoride (CF) or a graphite oxide (CO). The invention further provides a nanocomposite material containing intercalated FeF- or FeO- nanoparticles in a graphitic carbon matrix and its use as electrochemically active material in particular for use in electrochemical storage cells.
