An opposed piston linear generator having a mechanical-electrical energy converter which is operable: during an intake stroke to hold the first piston in a position with the first port open while the second piston is moved away from the first piston and maintains occlusion of the second port for drawing reactants through the first port into the chamber; during a power stroke in which a reaction in the compressed reactants in the chamber drives the first and second piston away from one another, to convert mechanical energy of the first piston into electrical energy and to control the position of the first piston so that the first piston occludes the first port; during an exhaust stroke to move the first piston toward the second piston while the second port is open, thereby exhausting reaction products from the chamber through the second port.
