An operating input from a driver is registered at an operating element, which is assigned to travel direction indicators. A blinking signal is output using the travel direction indicators after the registration of the operating input. A lane-change maneuver is started after registration of the operating input. A subsequent blinking signal is output following the blinking signal if the output of the blinking signal has ended and if ending of the lane-change maneuver has not yet taken place. The subsequent blinking signal is output at most for a first period of time if a current speed of the vehicle falls below a predetermined limiting speed. The subsequent blinking signal is output at most for a second period of time if the current speed of the vehicle exceeds the predetermined limiting speed.",
