The method involves providing cylinder (12) having a combustion chamber (2) delimited by a reciprocating piston (3). An outlet valve (4) is configured for discharging combustion gases. An inlet opening (5) configured for supplying charge air. A recirculation valve (6) is opened after the piston is open and the inlet opening has a flow communication to the combustion chamber. An independent claim is included for a two-stroke large diesel engine.
