The spoke (2) has a sheath covering a central portion of a metal core (5), where the sheath is made of a composite material having an assembly of fibers embedded in a matrix. The metal core includes an end portion structured and arranged to be attached to the rim or the hub of a wheel, and a main body having a cross-sectional surface area between approximately 30 percent and approximately 50 percent of a cross-sectional surface area of the end portion, where a cross-section of the sheath is between 150 and 500 percent of a cross-section of the metal core. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing the spoke for a bicycle wheel.
