The internal combustion engine has gas-exchange elements (4,5) and a fuel injector (6) arranged in a cylinder head (3) of a cylinder (2). A piston is movably arranged in the cylinder. A water injector (7) is provided for introducing water directly into a combustion chamber (1). The water injector is arranged such that the knocking combustion takes place in a combustion chamber region, where a combustion chamber surface is sprayed with water in the combustion chamber region. The internal combustion engine is a two-stroke engine, a four-stroke engine or a rotary piston engine.
