The invention relates to voltage source converter (30) for use in high voltage direct current power transmission and reactive power compensation comprising at least one chain-link converter (48) operably connected in use between AC and DC networks (40, 42), the chain-link converter including modules with at least two energy storage devices each, further including first and second pairs of electronic blocks connected in parallel with a first of the energy storage devices in a full-bridge arrangement to define a ladder-network module.
