Provided are a household electrical appliance and a method for controlling the household electrical appliance which take into consideration the convenience for a user using a time shift function. A washer-dryer (20) is provided with a time shift function for performing timer presetting processing on the basis of a time shift computation result which indicates an operation start time suitable for operation. The washer-dryer (20) includes: an input operation unit (21) for allowing a user to perform operations for operating the washer-dryer (20); a display unit (26) for displaying information relating to the operation of the washer-dryer (20); and an operation control unit (25) for controlling the operation of the washer-dryer (20) on the basis of the time shift computation result. When a start button on the input operation unit (21) is operated by the user, the operation control unit (25) automatically performs the timer presetting processing on the basis of the time shift computation result and also displays a timer preset time at the display unit (26).
