The apparatus has milling rotor (4) and main drive which can be coupled to rotor through a clutch, and an auxiliary drive which can be alternatively coupled to main drive of rotor. The clutch has a fixed input side and an axially displaceable output side which is displaced between engaged and disengaged positions. The axially displaceable side also has engaging and disengaging portion and fixed portion of transmission, which is driven by the auxiliary drive, such that transmission and clutch are selectively engaged and disengaged. An independent claim is included for a method for coupling an auxiliary drive for a milling rotor of a construction machine.
