The response characteristic signals are processed (E2), and an acoustic signature of the internal state is determined by calibrating a relationship between common parameters of the signals and an internal state of the battery. An acoustic emission response of another battery is determined to obtain a characteristic signal, and an internal state of the latter battery is estimated from the characteristics of the acoustic signature. An independent claim is also included for a system for estimating an internal state of a battery.",
