A fuel delivery system (20) for a direct injection internal combustion engine having two fuel rails (22, 23) and a plurality of fuel injectors (24) attached to and fluidly connected with each fuel rail (22, 23). A first fuel pump (32) has its outlet (38) connected with the first fuel rail (22) while a second fuel pump (42) has its outlet (46) connected with the second fuel rail (23). A crossover pipe (62) fluidly connects the outlets (38, 46) of both the first and second pumps (32, 42). Both the first pump (32) and the second pump (42) each have an intake stroke and a pumping stroke. Furthermore, the intake stroke of the first pump (32) coincides with the pumping stroke of the second pump (42) and vice versa.
