A method for operating a spark-ignition internal combustion engine, wherein the internal combustion engine is operated using hydrogen as fuel, a lambda injection value is a value that indicates the formation of a mixture on the basis of an injection fuel quantity (F) to be supplied to a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine and an air quantity (L) to be supplied to the combustion chamber from outside of the internal combustion engine, wherein the injection fuel quantity (F) is determined, at least in some ranges, independently of a lambda target value. In order to ensure adequate operation of hydrogen engines, the injection fuel quantity (F) is determined, at least in some ranges, at least on the basis of the air quantity (L).
