The vehicle washing process is performed automatically relative to vehicle motor movable washing tools (34,46,48). The movable washing tools are controlled by a control device (54). The vehicle characteristics are detected by sensors (64,67,72,74) of a vehicle washing facility (10). The vehicle to be washed is assigned automatically based on the detected vehicle characteristics of several predetermined classes of vehicles. The operations of the washing tools are automatically adapted with the associated class of vehicle. An independent claim is included for a vehicle washing facility.
