An internal combustion engine (1) is provided with a ratchet one-way clutch (30) between an output shaft (42) of a starting motor (40) and a crankshaft (2). The one-way clutch (30) comprises a claw piece (32) which rotates integrally with the crankshaft (2), and an engagement part (18a) which rotates integrally with the starting motor (40) and with which the claw piece (32) engages. An electronic control device (50) performs control for driving the starting motor (40) when the engine is stopped to reduce the difference between the rotation speed of the engine and the rotation speed of the starting motor (40), that is, the difference between the rotation speed of the claw piece (32) and the rotation speed of the engagement part (18a).
