The method involves transmitting a signal to a mobile identification transmitter (16) by a vehicle-sided transmission and/or receiving device (10). Distance (A) between the device and the transmitter is determined from absolute field strength of the signal, and evaluation parameter is determined from the distance. The parameter is transmitted to a vehicle (12) by the transmitter, and determination is made to find whether the parameter fulfills a predetermined criterion. A door of the vehicle is unlocked when the transmitter is positively authenticated and the parameter fulfills the criterion. The identification transmitter is designed as a remote control key or transponder. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle control system.
